Well, I tried my hand at another baby shoot today. It went well but I have soooo much to work on. I decided to try a different method of shooting today using the back button focus option that I’ve been reading about on Open Source Photo and Melissa Jill’s website. Canon’s also got a super-duper article on it. Briefly, back button focus allows one to use a button on the back of the camera, easily accessible by the right thumb, instead of the shutter to lock in autofocus. I wanted to try it because I’ve read so many people rave about how sharp their pictures are and how much more efficient it is. It was really hard for me to understand at first, but after taking some practice shots last night I figured, what the heck, let’s try it with the baby shoot.
It worked really well in some picture and not so much in others. I still haven’t figured out how to lock in my exposure while I’m locking in focus. Several of my pictures were overexposed because I kept taking the meter readings from Caroline’s pitch black shirt, using spot metering. The camera saw black and thought it was way too dark and lightened the picture right up. Also, since I’m not used to using this mode I had to really think hard about what I was doing and retrain myself to shoot differently. This allowed for less time and brain power to focus on composition and creativity. Oh well, this is all part of the journey and I hope, in time, it will become more automatic.
So, without further adieu I present to you Miss Caroline!
If you look close enough in this picture you’ll see Miss Caroline is giving me a thumbs up! Thanks for your support my dear!
There you go! Hope you enjoyed looking at them as much as I enjoyed taking them!
